Our hosting does not allow outgoing mail for security/spam reasons.

It's not a problem, it's expected behaviour. Most good CMS's will allow you to turn of emails for registration purposes.

And I can't say I appreciate the "fix it" there, this is a free service.

But... why?

In other words you don' t allow your user to let other people register on their sites!

And why do other hosting ( even paid hosting ) allow mail() ?

Registering is possible without emails, to say that all registrations depend on emails is foolish. Like I said earlier, GOOD content management systems will you to decide whether emails are required or not, if the one you are using does not then it's a fault of the software (lack of configurability).

We've also already said why we disallow it, imagine for a minute that we just turned mail() on, how long do you think it would take before some wise spark decides to make a PHP script which uses mail to send thousands of spam emails out, or to email bomb one person with thousands of abusive emails? I'm willing to bet that it would be less than a month. Paid hosts are safer from this because they generally have a lower volume to manage, can afford to pay staff to monitor these things and spammers would much prefer a free solution because as soon as they are discovered their account will be removed - and on a free host that means they haven't lost money. As to other free hosts, they either have their own security measures up (which we are discussing ourselves) or are merely foolish.

I understand that i can turn off registering mails, but i prefer them ON.

Can't you simply put some time between one mail and another? For example.... 45 sec?

Hi,

First of all, Thank you for your free host.

At least you should allow socket to allow our scripts to use a SMTP! So if any spammer will not your server directly to spam.
By the way, most spammers favourit to do this from localhost which supplys them with a varaiety of IPs.
In addition, Most good mail services offer anti spam filter, regardless its effection.

Best Regards,
Said Bakr.

Alex, Tom, ... People suck. sad.gif

QuasarLex, You signed up for a free service. We never claimed to give you SMTP use and we don't plan on it. If you don't want the service, don't use it! If you want php with mail() support I recommend you find some other host. There are plenty to offer, they just aren't free. Maybe you're paying for a reason! EXTRA SERVICES. So we're offering you a free service, take it or leave it.
