Turning your computer off and unused light while not in use is a good start.

I don't really do it for global warming reasons, I think we're already doomed. Saves on the electricity bill though.

Cell phone chargers use energy while plugged into an outlet with or without a cellphone plugged in.

For those interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_op..._climate_change (summary: the IPCC thinks there's a >90% probability it's our fault)

Not usually keen on linking wikipedia for contentious issues, but in this case it's fairly well vetted, and has sources attributed.

EDIT: and for the other side: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientists_op..._global_warming

If you don't think it's man-made, read this:

all i know is that if global warming happens, we will have another ice age. thats what im afraid of. But would this ice age fix all of our problems? at least i know my PC would love it. but it still a scary thought.

also they say their working on a car that will run from NewYork to California on one tank of gas.

I swear I am not doing a very good job at turning off my computer and unused light. :|

Better ways to make gas because..
  • We pollute with gas.
  • We are running out fast.
  • Its not cool to die by ice.

Nuff said.

As Bread mentioned I still turn off my PC at night as well as all other appliances, also turn lights off when not in use etc. but that's purely for economical reasons.

I don't believe its us causing it. The fact is the earth is always changing whether we carpool and turn out computers off at night or we drive v-8 muscle cars and leave our computers on 24/7. I do the same as tom for the same reasons. Nothing lasts forever, even the sun will eventually die out, then where will we be?

ps: im not hating on muscle cars

I don't care for Global Warming, plus, I believe the Military uses alot of electricity, so me turning off my lights and unplugging things, wont help.

Ziprock, hopefully some other terraformed planet wink.gif. The Sun's death isn't the more worrying future possibility, what is currently quite popular is the idea that the universe's expansion will continue to accelerate, spreading out the available energy to such an extent that it can't form matter any longer because of the laws of thermodynamics. The only viable solution I can see is to somehow encapsulate a small area, and keep it at a fairly high energy density - but not being a theoretical physicist I'm not sure on the feasibility of that.

Anyway, back on topic, I turn most things off - but not this box since it's running some services like zbot (zIRC's factoid/stuff bot). When I'm asleep all the peripherals go off though.

And don't forget, we live in the 21st century. In the last ice age, no one could coupe, but we have central heating air conditioners. We might be able to survive better.
