I personally haven't, except GIMP but I didn't use it very long or for much.
But http://www.osalt.com has a lot of different software on it, and you can search or browse by the commercial application and figure out which open source applications are comparable. It's a neat little site. |

I recommend highly Paint.net www.getpaint.net. Honestly the greatest piece of free software I've every found, it has a similar layout as PS, it can pretty much do everything photoshop can do, of course some things not as easily. I highly recommend it. The community is amazing as well, I've still to this day not found a PS forum as good as that Paint.net forum was, everyone willing to help out etc, similar to this forum.
Kevin DiGennaro Edit: I notice this is in the 3D section, if you're looking for a 3D program I suggest Blender (for more in depth 3D) or sketch up, my dad introduced me to sketch up, he's an architect for a big firm, he used to do all this drawing on pen and paper and a drafting board, now everything is computerized and he's more of the boss, but when he needs to design something he does it in sketch up opposed to 3D Max or Maya. |

I really like Blender. They keep updating it every year with a real world based project. Check out Blender.
