If you have read my previous topics, you would already know my computer has been cluster fucked by some massive virus. I have always known Norton was shit, but I just made do with it until I could find a ligament free one. Well, after that massive virus that Norton seemed fine with letting through its firewall, I'm searching for new Anti-Virus and Firewall programs for my computer (preferably ones that WONT let viruses wreck my computer).
I'm testing out some suggested ones on my laptop (which I honestly dont care about). I'm testing avast! antivirus and PC Tools Firewall Plus (both of which are free editions...right?). Does anyone have any suggestions to some FREE ones which work well? Really, not going to spend money I dont have on virus protection when I can get a free one elsewhere. |

I pretty much run around butt naked 'cept for the windows firewall.
I know, we've heard it all before . . . but: if you run with wolves, expect to be eaten by them; or, if you put your "willy" in the gutter don't expect to be dis-ease free, etc.. It's the the internet habit you've fallen into, time to change the habit. Have you got another computer (or access to a different computer with the same type of HDD(s)) that has both a PRIMARY and SECONDARY HDD capability? if so, why not remove yours and place it in theirs as a slave and have them run anti-viral through it . . . er' did ya think of that already. okay. zpcs |

Ya, I downloaded that 2 days (or something like that) ago and I'm instantly SOOOOOO much happier. It completely fixed my computer as far as I can tell. Great stuff. Now just have to figure out why Norton wont let me uninstall... |

(but they have a good blog) Download the Norton removal tool and it will rid your pc of the crapware. http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgen...005033108162039 |

The only thing I dislike is that I cant automate the program for when a virus is detected, but thats a minor disturbance in the free version of fantastic software. Even so, my new firewall has stopped everything anyway... I need to clear my restore points though because it seems I still have bits of trojans caught in them. Thats a job for the weekend...

AVAST is the best ,i have been using it for the past few years and u can blindly believe in it...its worth having it as a computer protection and its available free also and get a spyware also as a double protection..

So why have i believed Norton to be the very best. I have purchased a 3 computer pack and it downloads updates every hour or so!
The only time i was seriously hit by a virus was when I used AVG...which will stop updating after a time, just about when they expect you to buy it! Gina |

Once my computer had it preinstalled and it wouldn't let me change my homepage because it thought a "virus" was doing it. Like I said earlier Avast FTW! |

For free I would say AVG, but NOD32 is the best overall.

AVG Free is great, no-nonsense anti-virus. If you can afford to pay for the Anti-Malware version, even better. |

I hear Microsoft are beta testing a free virus scanner. Maybe you can use that when a final version is released.
Otherwise, do what Bread said and consider moving to Linux **applies peer pressure** |

Otherwise, do what Bread said and consider moving to Linux **applies peer pressure** Most of us can't move to linux because the software we use to design websites doesn't work on it. (Photoshop, Dreamweaver)... Don't even think of telling me to use Gimp because it doesn't even compare to Photoshop imo. |

Google have done a lot of work on getting photoshop to run smoothly under wine: http://wiki.winehq.org/AdobePhotoshop I don't personally use photoshop, but when I ran the trial version, I didn't have many problems. |
