I am having some problems with my Wordpress 2.8.4 installation.
The first, and most annoying, problem is that I cannot enter API keys for plugins (like Akismet) and make the keys work. I am thinking because my site cannot communicate with the other servers. I see the following error on the dashboard: Warning: error_log() has been disabled for security reasons in /www/vndv.com/c/a/r/carlscape101/htdocs/wp-includes/class-simplepie.php on line 8873 RSS Error: A feed could not be found at http://wordpress.org/development/feed/ I also see some more errors like the above on the dashboard. Again I am assuming it is because my site cannot communicate with other servers. The last problem is that I cannot use the built in updater of Wordpress nor the built-in Plugin Installer of Wordpress. Why? Thanks in Advance for your help!!! Carl |

This is due to PHP Safe Mode in effect. No remote connections are allowed.

This is due to PHP Safe Mode in effect. No remote connections are allowed. You can update Wordpress manually and it is not difficult! 1. Perform a complete backup of both your database and directory structure (in case something goes wrong) 2. Login to your WordPress administration panel and deactivate all active plugins 3. Download and extract the latest STABLE WordPresss version to a folder on your computer 4. Upload the extracted files to your WordPress server directory with the exception of the following: * wp-content folder and it's content * wp-includes/languages if you are using a custom language file 5. To perform the upgrade, navigate to http://yoursitename/wp-admin/upgrade.php and follow the on screen steps 6. Login to the administration panel and reactivate your plugins one by one to ensure that they still work with the new version of WordPress Enjoy the new WordPress release! |

Thanks for y'all's help, but what about API Keys?
I mean API keys are really important.... like activating Akismet or something like that (I wanted to activate a auto-tagging plugin). I guess I just have to deal with it? =[ |

I have this same problem. Could this perhaps be the reason I get this error when uploading images?
Unable to create directory /www/99k.org/i/t/s/its-a-mom-thing/htdocs/wp-content/uploads/2009/11. Is its parent directory writable by the server? Before it's asked, yes the directory is writable. |

Edit: So with Wordpress (at least with v2.8.5) you must uncheck "Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders" under Settings > Miscellaneous. Not sure why it works this way, but there you have it. |

You may laugh off but this is what I've done.
After I found setting up the permission 777 to wp-content/uploads didn't help, I manually created the folder called "2010" which contains sub-folders from "01" to "12"(I set the permission of 777 for those folders just in case) under wp-content/uploads. So far, I can upload the contents. I made the folders up to 2013 and see if I will still be using the blog at that time... |
