A layer mask is added to a layer to reveal or hide an entire layer or certain portions of a layer. To hide a layer, a layer mask makes pixels transparent temporarily, which can be retrieved any time in future.
Layer masks are grayscale images. They are created with painting or selection tools. Painting with white reveals, and painting with black hides, a layer. Layer masks also define various levels of transparency. If you paint the mask in gray, the layer will appear semi-transparent. |

A layer mask in Photoshop is used to control a layer's transparency. It's great if you wish to reveal or hide portions of a layer using a mask. While you can use the Transparency control to adjust the opacity of a layer, using a mask gives you a lot more flexibility in what you show, and what you hide. Better still, you do it all without erasing a single pixel! We'll show you how to get the most out of this function.

If you want to create vector mask in photoshop then you should to take a layer put there a image or anything press add a vector mask next take a gradient tool color Foreground to Background and drag here.

I explained how to do selective colouring using the History Brush and here's how to do a similar job using the more controllable Layer mask. The photo, taken at Whitby, North Yorkshire, is ideal as the colourful boat in the foreground can be painted back into colour once the pictures is reduced to black & white. Double click on the thumbnail of your photo in the layer palette and click ok in the box that appears.
