Hi. I just started learning about PHP and Mysql and I've recently been following this Guestbook tutorial. The tutorial has been going ok except now I've hit this problem where the guestbook appears to submit something but when you view the guestbook, it looks as though no text has been submitted, whilst showing the Id and date/time. See for your self here.

As for what I've done, I ran this query from the tutorial on SQL Buddy and exported the database table using this Database exported and loaded the file onto the site with Filezilla.

SQL query:
CODE
CREATE TABLE `guestbook` (
`id` int(4) NOT NULL auto_increment,
`name` varchar(65) NOT NULL default '',
`email` varchar(65) NOT NULL default '',
`comment` longtext NOT NULL,
`datetime` varchar(65) NOT NULL default '',
PRIMARY KEY (`id`)
) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=1;

I also made the three PHP files with the codes shown on the tutorial, which I also added onto the site using Filezilla.

guestbook.php:
CODE
<table width="400" border="0" align="center" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="0">
<tr>
<td><strong>Test Sign Guestbook </strong></td>
</tr>
</table>
<table width="400" border="0" align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="1" bgcolor="#CCCCCC">
<tr>
<form id="form1" name="form1" method="post" action="addguestbook.php">
<td>
<table width="400" border="0" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1" bgcolor="#FFFFFF">
<tr>
<td width="117">Name</td>
<td width="14">:</td>
<td width="357"><input name="name" type="text" id="name" size="40" /></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Email</td>
<td>:</td>
<td><input name="email" type="text" id="email" size="40" /></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td valign="top">Comment</td>
<td valign="top">:</td>
<td><textarea name="comment" cols="40" rows="3" id="comment"></textarea></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td> </td>
<td> </td>
<td><input type="submit" name="Submit" value="Submit" /> <input type="reset" name="Submit2" value="Reset" /></td>
</tr>
</table>
</td>
</form>
</tr>
</table>
<table width="400" border="0" align="center" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="0">
<tr>
<td><strong><a href="viewguestbook.php">View Guestbook</a> </strong></td>
</tr>
</table>

addguestbook.php:
CODE
<?php
$host="localhost"; // Host name
$username=""; // Mysql username
$password=""; // Mysql password
$db_name="test"; // Database name
$tbl_name="guestbook"; // Table name

// Connect to server and select database.
mysql_connect("$host", "$username", "$password")or die("cannot connect server ");
mysql_select_db("$db_name")or die("cannot select DB");

$datetime=date("y-m-d h:i:s"); //date time

$sql="INSERT INTO $tbl_name(name, email, comment, datetime)VALUES('$name', '$email', '$comment', '$datetime')";
$result=mysql_query($sql);

//check if query successful
if($result){
echo "Successful";
echo "<BR>";

// link to view guestbook page
echo "<a href='viewguestbook.php'>View guestbook</a>";
}

else {
echo "ERROR";
}
mysql_close();
?>

And viewguestbook.php:
CODE
<table width="400" border="0" align="center" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="0">
<tr>
<td><strong>View Guestbook | <a href="guestbook.php">Sign Guestbook</a> </strong></td>
</tr>
</table>
<br>

<?php

$host="localhost"; // Host name
$username=""; // Mysql username
$password=""; // Mysql password
$db_name="test"; // Database name
$tbl_name="guestbook"; // Table name

// Connect to server and select database.
mysql_connect("$host", "$username", "$password")or die("cannot connect server ");
mysql_select_db("$db_name")or die("cannot select DB");
$sql="SELECT * FROM $tbl_name";
$result=mysql_query($sql);
while($rows=mysql_fetch_array($result)){
?>

<table width="400" border="0" align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="1" bgcolor="#CCCCCC">
<tr>
<td><table width="400" border="0" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1" bgcolor="#FFFFFF">
<tr>
<td>ID</td>
<td>:</td>
<td><? echo $rows['id']; ?></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td width="117">Name</td>
<td width="14">:</td>
<td width="357"><? echo $rows['name']; ?></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Email</td>
<td>:</td>
<td><? echo $rows['email']; ?></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td valign="top">Comment</td>
<td valign="top">:</td>
<td><? echo $rows['comment']; ?></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td valign="top">Date/Time </td>
<td valign="top">:</td>
<td><? echo $rows['datetime']; ?></td>
</tr>
</table></td>
</tr>
</table>

<?php
}
mysql_close(); //close database
?>

No matter what I try, I just can't get my guestbook to work and I don't even know if it's something I've done or if the tutorial author has made a mistake somewhere and I also put in host "localhost", username "SQL buddy username", password "SQL Buddy password" and the correct database and table names in both addguestbook.php and viewguestbook.php.

I'd very much appreciate any help or advice.

Thanks in advance smile.gif

here is the code which may helpful for you.

CODE
Addguestbook.php
<?php
$host="localhost"; // Host name
$username=""; // Mysql username
$password=""; // Mysql password
$db_name="test"; // Database name
$tbl_name="guestbook"; // Table name

// Connect to server and select database.
mysql_connect("$host", "$username", "$password")or die("cannot connect server ");
mysql_select_db("$db_name")or die("cannot select DB");

$datetime=date("y-m-d h:i:s"); //date time

$name=$_POST['name'];
$email=$_POST['email'];
$comment=$_POST['comment'];

$sql="INSERT INTO $tbl_name(name, email, comment, datetime)VALUES('$name', '$email', '$comment', '$datetime')";
$result=mysql_query($sql);

//check if query successful
if($result){
echo "Successful";
echo "<BR>";

// link to view guestbook page
echo "<a href='viewguestbook.php'>View guestbook</a>";
}

else {
echo "ERROR";
}
mysql_close();
?>

Now guestbook record added successfully but you are not able to view your data properly just because you are not using PHP tag properly. so that use code given below in your webpage and then guestbook data display properly………..

CODE
<table width="400" border="0" align="center" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="0">
<tr>
<td><strong>View Guestbook | <a href="guestbook.php">Sign Guestbook</a> </strong></td>
</tr>
</table>
<br>

<?php
$host="localhost"; // Host name
$username=""; // Mysql username
$password=""; // Mysql password
$db_name="test"; // Database name
$tbl_name="guestbook"; // Table name

// Connect to server and select database.
mysql_connect($host,$username,$password)or die("cannot connect server ");
mysql_select_db($db_name)or die("cannot select DB");
$sql="SELECT * FROM $tbl_name";
$result=mysql_query($sql);
while($rows=mysql_fetch_array($result)){
?>

<table width="400" border="0" align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="1" bgcolor="#CCCCCC">
<tr>
<td><table width="400" border="0" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1" bgcolor="#FFFFFF">
<tr>
<td>ID</td>
<td>:</td>
<td><?php echo $rows['id']; ?></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td width="117">Name</td>
<td width="14">:</td>
<td width="357"><?php echo $rows['name']; ?></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Email</td>
<td>:</td>
<td><?php echo $rows['email']; ?></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td valign="top">Comment</td>
<td valign="top">:</td>
<td><?php echo $rows['comment']; ?></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td valign="top">Date/Time </td>
<td valign="top">:</td>
<td><?php echo $rows['datetime']; ?></td>
</tr>
</table></td>
</tr>
</table>

<?php
}
mysql_close(); //close database
?>
