Full Version: Looking For Inspiration For A Band Logo

Hey all,
For months I've been working on things for my band including webpages advertisments custom merchandise etc. During all this time I've also been trying to come up with a logo. For what ever reason it's been insanely hard for me. I'm not sure how I want the logo to look or what I want it to be. I need some advice/suggestions, let me know what you think of when you read the below information. Feel free to draw your ideas or just type what you think. If someone draws something I really like and of course with there permission I may use it, and of course the artist would get full credit for it etc.

The bands name is Nascent Descent. Our album being released in about 6 months will be called 'Standing Tall'. We are a heavy alternative rock band. Our slogan for atleast this album is Stay strong, Stand tall. Below are a few things I've done for the band not necasarily logos.

Our webpage is http://www.nascentdescent.com, its still under construction but you might get some ideas from it.

Any suggestions will be greatfully apreciated!

Thanks,
Nascent Descent

This [below] is only a suggestion.

Grunge fonts have been avoided because almost everyone expects such a typeface for a rock/alternative outfit. Replace the graphic at the lower-left corner with your own drawing/graphic.

This is a PNG image with transparency [so that it can be used over any background of your choice].

Thanks for the reply machine I like what you got going, I really like that little eye thing haha im not sure why. I like the concept of the text but it seems to big maybe? Mabye ill try to draw something up using a simular concept thanks for the reply.

I like this text better I like what you had but i didnt like the acutal text, i used 'Bummer' added some styles to it. The image i used is an image i drew in MS paint over a year ago, the image part is what i havent been blanking out on, iono what to draw.

edit: o wow the drop shadow was transparent it lost the transparency when i converted to gif, ill see if theres a better format

maybe the concept of a vector clock? created quickly, i might customize it more for the band and see what happens

In case you want the text+arrow [pointing downwards] effect, let me show you how to get that arrow to be a part of the text itself for a more integrated/cohesive look, okay? smile.gif Here goes:

In Photoshop, type your text in a blank document and then rasterize it [right-click & select 'rasterize layer'].

Use the rectangular marquee tool to select a small and appropriate section of the letter you want to add that arrow to [see below].

With your marquee selection still active, press Ctrl+T to engage the free transform tool. You can now transform the selected portion of the text. Drag the bottom-centre handle downwards [see below].

Now just draw an arrowhead using the pen tool [see final result below].

As you can tell, I've added stroke and drop shadow layer effects.

thanks for the tip machine ill try it out

hey machine, i know your really good with 3D modeling, any tips on creating a spiralling stair case? Ive been trying in PS and Sketch Up but im having trouble not sure why. The idea was to have a stair case spiraling down into the clock.

Thanks,
Kevin

Well, I'm not familiar with Sketch Up, but one way to do it in a standard 3D application would be to create a helix shape/spline and then use it as a guide to create the spiral staircase.

You can, for instance, create a simple rectangular box [the stair] and then 'distribute' copies of it along the helix to get a basic spiral staircase. You'd then need to modify the boxes further to get a reasonably realistic model. See if the 3D app you use has a 'distribute evenly along shape/spline' option -- it'll make your life much easier smile.gif .

Alternatively, you can use Max's ready-made 3D spiral staircase object:

Download the model, arrange the objects as you want them and then use a 3D app to map your clock face graphic on to the cylinder smile.gif .

thanks again machine, ill try it out in blender, sketch up i doubt can do that lol

edit: can blender read the 3D max file?

So its been decided that the logo is going to be a stick figure, below is what ive been working on its not done but its almost finished, i was looking for some feed back smile.gif

Well, this [see below] is my interpretation of your logo/mascot and it is only a suggestion. The image you posted above reminds me more of hip-hop than rock -- but that is a purely personal opinion smile.gif .

I felt that the logo/mascot for a rock/alternative should look a bit... rough/grungey smile.gif and so I avoided clean lines and came up with a rag or voodoo doll type figure.

Such a figure can also be used together with a text-based logo. Again, this is only a suggestion.

wow that looks awesome machine, the one i posted above was actaully kinda modeled after myself so its funny that you said that haha.
I came up with this, . But i really do like yours. Could i have permisson to present it to the band? if they like it maybe we could use it? as soon as the site was up and running id be sure to give you credit etc.

Thanks,
Kevin

Sure, go ahead and all the best with your band and your site smile.gif .

Note: Here's the 'voodoo doll' graphic as a transparent GIF -- use this one if you wish to use it over a different/non-white background. Add a drop shadow effect if you want.

Cheers!

Thanks a ton Machine!

Having drawn the 2D vector voodoo doll, I thought it'd be interesting to see how it'd appear in 3D smile.gif . And this is what the 3D vodoo doll looks like:

I've intentionally made it a little different from the 2D graphic [above] so it can be used elsewhere -- perhaps a visual element in a larger image -- without any conflict with the vector drawing...

i like the 2nd logo. it looks simple yet very catchy.
