I am looking into offering free website hosting...I would rather use a 1and1.com package but I am not sure...Would I need to get reseller? because I am not selling it I am just giving it away tongue.gif Does anyone know? Thanks - Colin
Ed
Reseller will work fine, just allows you to create webhosting accounts upon your existing hosting account. A dedicated server is probably better, and you will have a much finer grain of control over it, but it will set you back a lot more money, and unless you placed ads on all hosted pages, hardly worth the money to offer free hosting on.
MrCracker
Ads suck. Go with reseller.
Colin
Okay, I plan on requiring a small amount of posting in the forums and I will put ads there...also do you all know good reseller hosts? I think http://www.websitesource.com/hosting/welco...;utm_medium=ppc looked promising
Becky
Is there's one thing you need to watch out for, it's joke overselling reseller hosting. If you think a deal is too good to be true - it probably is. Start out with a small, reasonable package, and then if you make money, move on up to something more. But those places that offer 100GB of space and 1000GB of bandwidth for $10/month? Don't buy it. I hate overselling.

Yeah, why pay for something you don't need? I've nearly fallen into that trap a few times. In all honesty, what site uses over 100GB of storage and 1TB or bandwidth? Besides, Google, I know of none (bandwidth anyway).

Me and my cousin started a free webhost using reseller hosting a while back. Entitled, Varrock Hosting. It actually kicked off well, within the first day of me even uploading the site. The big problem was, someone hacked the site and our host SAID it had 99.9% uptime but it was more like downtime with all the DDoS attacks it was getting...
MrCracker
Lol.. yah you have to know how to protect your server from DDos attacks.. by the way Varrock Hosting.. I'm guessing you got that from Runescape?

Dont get 1and1.

Get some reseller package with cpanel.

I am currently using their reseller package. 20 GB storage, and unmetered bandwidth (or so they say) for $8.50 USD a month. I've got it and their customer support is excellent.

They also run cPanel X.

So far, I've had no issues or anything with them, and I definitely recommend.

The whole idea of the free webhost was my cousins idea. The name, the idea, everything. I thought the name was crap and could've been a helluva lot better, but he paid for the hosting lol. As per usual, he paid for the hosting and I did all the work (making the site, managing the WHM, creating accounts, offering support, etc etc), lol.

That's generally the case. Me and my cousin are alike in so many ways - we're both decent at Web Design and Graphic Design (though he's better at the latter) but while he tends to play MMORPGs (specfically WoW) most of the time online, I prefer to work on my sites or forums.

Oh Ic.. I tend to get distracted from learning more about web design with Guild Wars around lol.

You've fallen for it; there is no such thing as "unmetered bandwidth". Wait until that company gets so popular their servers start filling up too much. You'll watch that "unmetered" start to disappear.

You can't get something for nothing, as they say.

Becky, sorry to say, but you're wrong. No such thing as "unlimited", but "unmetered" does exist. Unmetered simply means you get xMegabit of a port. So, if you buy 10Mbit unmetered, what you get is the maximum of what 10Mbit can manage 24/7 which IIRC is just over 3.3TB. Here is one of my servers, we are on unmetered 100mbit: http://67.159.44.138/mrtg/index.html
Becky
Oic. Well you learn something new every day smile.gif For some reason I always made the connection of unmetered and unlimited as the same thing, which we can both agree that UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH WOMG is not possible >.<

You know i think thats a great way to make a successfull community. Offer free web hosting. Loads of newbies look for free web hosting with no ads on and say you say to them - all you have to do is post 30 times on my forum - no spamming as your posts will be deleted.

Then your onto a winner. Yes rightly so the hosting will cost you a bit of money, but aswell as offering small free packages you could offer bigger ones with prices. That way you will make your money back that way aswell as getting money from advertising and a successful community will soon pay for the free hosting you have given away.
