This happened to me about a week ago when it said I had -2 New Messages. Now it says I have -4, as shown here:

maybe its like the user count bug.....

I found out that its because you deleted unread messages.

Wow you're completely right, I had a PM from someone (I had already read it in the popup that told me I had new message) and didn't want to respond, so I just deleted it and my count went from 1 New Message to -1 New Message.

Also, the member and post count on the forum index is completely wrong. Damn IPB; you have to pay for their support, yet you pay $$$ for their product.
