Ok here is my little problem.. explained... :

As you might already know i am from France, recently i decided to move back to the US (Fresno / CA) (move back because i lived there for a year while younger)
I recently graduated from 'high school' as you guys might say, and i want to continue school in Fresno.

Now, the thing is that French are 'smarter' (don't take it bad) we have 12 different classes each year, start at 8 finish at 6 unlike you guys (US) so the thing is since i am moving, my Marketing & Business Management graduation is equivalent to a +2 years. So i basically have a 2 years in Marketing & B.M.

Now my problem, what's after that ? i look around and after highschool its College right ? or is it University ? i am just so lost, because for us College is actually before highschool and University is after highschool. I am so lost.
I would like to know 'also' whats an undergraduate ? Am i looking to apply to university ? or apply to college ?

Really need help here, i am moving to the US in less than 10 days and need to set things up while i am still here.

Thanks a lot !

in the u.s, an undergraduate is someone who hasnt yet graduated college/university. college and a university are the same things, and this comes after highschool. basically, i think you still need to go 2 more years at college before you get your bachelors degree. (this is the second lowest degree after graduating from college, but it is still a great accomplishment and opens many doors.) What are you looking into for a job? i could recommend a few colleges for you...smile.gif

So basically, i am in marketing and bm, i went to this org. where they told me the BAC (graduation) is worth 2 years college in the US.

Can you please tell me what's after bachelor ? I really dunno what job i am looking into since i really dunno how it really works, see you guys have majors... classes... i mean, lets say i want to be a broker... how does it work ? is there specific classes to take... ? a certain degree to achieve... is there a place where i can look into it ?

As for a college i found one.. well 2 they are in Fresno (where i am going to be) I dunno if they are popular or anything because after looking around i also found that it matters... unlike France, any school (private / public ..) needs to follow the same 'program' that the government builds up... the rest i just the way they teach it.

I am really happy to move and probably go to university... but i am so freakin lost and don't even know if i can go or what i have to do... i go on ANY site and look around... and see so many crappy things that i don't get tongue.gif

ok so you major in a specific topic, (this is the main thing you will be studying) and then get your bachelors on it. A bachelors degree on a subject is usually a very broad idea. if you want to focus more on something a little more specific you do 2 more years of college. this is called graduate work. after those two years you will get a masters degree in a certain and more specific topic. This opens many more doors as well. If you want to go even further, you can go on and get your doctors degree. this is two more years after you get your masters, and is the highest degree you can get. If you get your doctors degree you are really studying something very specific. so to achieve doctors degree, college would be 8 years total (6 for you i guess.) Usually you can find out what to major when you get a bachelors degree, because its pretty broad. while a doctors degree is very specific.

You apply to either a college or university. The difference between college and university is often just in name (eg. Dartmouth College vs Stanford University). A lot of times, universities are more well-known than some colleges. The only real difference in terms of the end result is regarding community colleges, which mainly offer two year programs and can give vocational training, but do not give bachelor's degrees.

You should check with each college/university you apply to regarding how they will count your completed 2 year credit towards a full bachelors degree there. Different schools' standards will have varying standards.

After you get a bachelors' degree, you have a bunch of options!
1) work in the industry right away
2) begin your master's/ graduate program
3) do a PhD
4) there are some schools that offer combined masters/ PhD programs. These are probably ~6 yrs to complete but it depends on the school.

Most people do option 1 or 2. For a broker, I think a good guide is http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos122.htm#training (US Dept of Labor). It says that most bachelor degree holders work immediately in the industry but go on to complete an MBA (Masters in Business Administration) for higher level jobs.

For now, you should talk to academic advisors in your top schools about what courses/ majors they would advise you to take as an undergraduate. I think your focus on business and marketing would be fine though.

Good luck ! smile.gif
