I decided to try my hand at making some graphics in photoshop. With help from some tutorials, I basically made a frontpage background/header.
Since I'm more into blogs, wordpress templates influenced the style

I think it needs a bottom image to complete the page but this is what I've done so far:

you might wanna use Adobe Fireworks too.

I have a few Adobe software installed by my school actually!
I've played around with Fireworks for rollover images and creating hotspots. But I don't really get what the purpose of that software is (eg basic focus seems like Photoshop -> image editing, Dreamweaver -> web page, Flash -> ...flash!)

Fireworks > FIREWORKS *BOOM*
Actually fireworks creates vector images. A vector image is an image that can be scaled (enlarged, or made smaller) to any size and not lose quality. Take a jpg image and blow it up, notice it gets all pixelated. Well vector images wouldn't do that.
I'm sure there are other uses for it, but I have never used the program myself.

not bad. looks like it has the uniqueness of a portfolio page.

Thanks. I guess then Fireworks would be really helpful for small graphics and huge graphics on a web page.
I'm not specifically looking to make a portfolio but it's cool you think it's near that level

That looks great for just starting off, I like how you have layered the images but like Jenie said I think it would look better if it were a little lighter.

I agree with that! Something seemed really...off...about it.

Think it looks great especially for someone who is new to photoshop. If you are going to use your graphics for the web, just be considerate of file size when you start to create your design (especially if you end up doing stuff for clients).

for a starter, it's quite good. but you need practice, practice and more practice then you'll go a long way. goodluck!
