Anyone got any advice on making a Favicon? I'd like to make one for Glitches Exposed but as I've tried before, mine generally suck as it's bloody hard to work on a 16x16 pixel canvas. And if you work on a larger scale and resize it to be smaller then it looks like crap quality...

All help is appreciated.

Make something simple, if you try and be a Graphic Artist while making a 16x16 image, you're bound to mess up. Favicons are supposed to be simple, a circle or a square with an alphabet or symbol on it. Nothing too fancy. smile.gif

The usual then lolz.

Like a black cirlce, on a white canvas and white text on the circle so it looks like its flowing into the background...

hello Nexus.

Maybe this reply is a bit too late to be of any use, but if you are still looking for quick favicon creation, then take a look at this page right here. This page -- and the site in general -- is of great help.

Cheers!

Pretty useful site, thanks.

Also, when I create mine, I make it a bit bigger maybe 35x35 or something, none-the-less still pretty simple, and just resize it. Example of one of mine is: http://rpportfolio.zymichost.com (not my logo/symbol, but it's resized)

Favicons are not just for the url field. They help users find a site in their bookmarks faster (hence the name FAV-I-CONS), and also RSS feeds...

Do you have anysuggestion for why the favicon won't show up with the url or favorites? I went to the site you suggested, made the favicon using their service, and inserted the code <link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico"> they supplied into my index page. The favicon file is uploaded into the main directory.

@bestjimmy: Well, I think it takes a while for the favicon to show up in both the areas you mentioned.

In fact, the instructions on that online favicon generator page says:

Note that your favicon may not appear immediately after you've completed the above two steps. In fact, it may take a few days, and in IE, sometimes the favicon will disappear from time to time due to a browser bug.

However, I must admit that in my case, the icon appeared in both fields [URL field and the Favourites] immediately, once I closed IE and re-lauched it. I had uploaded the favicon into the root directory of my site as well...

Thanks for the reply... I did read their advisement about the possible delay. It's been a few days now, and still the fabled favicon has yet to grace me with its appearance. I've also tried it on an OfficeLive site I have access to, and a no-show there, too. That's why I figured it must be something I'm doing. I'll keep waiting, then send out a search party if the little bugger doesn't show up soon...
