Does free web hosting offer PHP?
html works just fine, but attempting to display a .php causes a 500 server error.

Also, what's with the 2,000 files per directory limit? Is there any way around that?

what kind of script our you trying to use..

custom?

500 errors usually happen when theres a HTACCESS, just delete the .hta and you should be fine.

and about the 2000 file-directory limit, i didn't know there was.

There is no 2000 file-dietory limit, what u might say is theres 2000Mb disc space, well u can put over 1.000.000 files if it now surpaces the 2000Mg limit and well its a lot if u ask me, one of the biggest i might add, and you dont even have to pay!!!

Yes, I'm using a custom PHP website.. I'll try ridding the .htaccess

And I have a directory with 3,812 files totalling 6mb (files are about 1.5k). When transferring by FTP, the server accepted 2,000 and refused the rest. I've tried numerous times, no luck. Altogether I'm only using about 35mb of server space so far. I've never seen this problem happen before..

The non-indented lines are returns from the FTP server.
CODE
   TYPE I
200 TYPE is now 8-bit binary
Skip inv_misc_key_10.jpg
Failed 0 file(s) and Skipped 1 file(s)

I uploaded this same file to another directory and it worked fine.
Because it cuts off at 2,000 files (a nice, even number), it indicates the possibility of a set limit. If it cut off at 1,851 then I'd be more leaning towards a technical problem.
These 3,812 files have been uploaded to a few other FTP servers without problem so I'm pretty sure it has to do with the server settings here.
