Hey...there has been alot of talk in the news about this topic lately so I figured I would ask what you all think...My view is...
It should be uses very sparingly, on high profile terrorist cases...it is torture but its not lethal, If innocent people's lives are in danger and someone knows something they are not telling that would save those people, tell me why they should not be tortured into coughing it up? ...Its more humane then letting innocent people die isn't it? and It is more humane then other forms of torture like cutting fingers off...I think the milatary should not use it, anything thats high profile enough would be handled by the CIA and if you give the CIA an option of waterboarding rather then (not following the rules but it happens) Horrible torturing someone...like beating, pistol whipping, cutting, snipping off fingers, etc. then there would be less 'inhumane' torture but they would still be able to save innocent people's lives...And Simalar to Tazering anyone who would take part in administering waterboarding should have to experiance it several times...

Hippy scum reporting in. This is illegal for a reason. All humans have rights and the United States has signed agreements saying it will not torture prisoners. The kind of attitude that I see displayed by talking heads like Bill O'Reilly and (suprisingly) Tom here is frightening to say the least. It's a slippery slope, once you start torturing "the terrorists" why not torture those accused of murder to find out where the bodies are buried, and if that's okay, why not torture those accused of robbery to find out where the put the money, Ad nauseam. If it's okay for the United States to torture people, then it must be okay for other countries too. Then we've got tourists being captured by governments and tortured to death. But we're arguing a moot point anyways, because it's illegal. For the government to engage in the activity regardless of morality it needs to be LEGAL for them to do so. They all need to be punished for breaking the law.

Just saying, I support Waterboarding in only one situation.

When it comes to committing a horrible crime, I've always felt the punishment should fit the crime (which it sort of does if you're a rapist, but thats not intentional). I think that if someone purposely drowns someone to death, they should spend their entire jail sentence with a mandatory waterboarding per day. That way they will be able to experience what they forced someone else to experience for the rest of their life.

The Constitution does not forbid the infliction of physical pain on another person to force his compliance with certain courses of action. The Bill of Rights says specifically that no person "shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself" and it also bans cruel and unusual punishments.
