So I was reading Digg, this amused me:
QUOTE
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Surfing the net has become an obsession for many Americans with the majority of U.S. adults feeling they cannot go for a week without going online and one in three giving up friends and sex for the Web.

A survey asked 1,011 American adults how long they would feel OK without going on the Web, to which 15 percent said a just a day or less, 21 percent said a couple of days and another 19 percent said a few days.
Only a fifth of those who took part in an online survey conducted by advertising agency JWT between Sept 7 and 11 said they could go for a week.
"People told us how anxious, isolated and bored they felt when they are forced off line," said Ann Mack, director of trend spotting at JWT, which conducted the survey to see how technology was changing people's behavior.
"They felt disconnected from the world, from their friends and family," she told Reuters.
The poll, released on Wednesday, found the use of cell phones and the Internet were becoming more and more an essential part of life with 48 percent of respondents agreeing they felt something important was missing without Internet access.
More than a quarter of respondents -- or 28 percent -- admitted spending less time socializing face-to-face with peers because of the amount of time they spend online.
It also found that 20 percent said they spend less time having sex because they are online.
Cell phones won out over television in a question asking which device people couldn't go without but the Internet trumped all, regarded as the most necessary.
"It is taking away from offline activities, among them having sex, socializing face-to-face, watching TV and reading newspapers and magazines. It cuts into that share," said Mack.
"I don't suppose their partners are too pleased about it."
Mack said a clear trend to emerge from the survey was the increasing need for mobility with people no longer satisfied with just broadband access from home and wanting hand-held devices like iPhones and BlackBerrys.
JWT, whose parent company is WPP, has come up with a new advertising category for people whose lives are so tied up with new technology.
"We are calling them 'digitivity denizens,' those who see their cell phones as an extension of themselves, whose online and offline lives are co-mingled and who would chose a Wi-Fi connection over TV any day," said Mack.
"This is how they communicate, entertain and live."

Edit: I personally can't go 24hrs without checking my email, or websites.

I mostly agree with the article, going for a week would be hard for me. I could go three days but that is about it.

Yeah I mean I'm pretty dependent on the internet in some ways; I can't go more than a day without checking my messages for one, especially on certain sites where I'm staff and I really *need* to keep in touch.
But at the same time, I like social situations. So I can't substitute talking to people online with hanging out with friends. I feel isolated *_*
I don't really like TV though, which is a good thing I guess. I do have hours of conversations on my cell phone but meh.

Yeah before we upgraded to a new ISP my cable was out for 3 weeks. Womg. I was using DIALUP to check my messages.
I thought I'd never have to hear that awful sound of the dial tone 10 years ago.

I can go without internet for a week. In fact, I usually only go on once a week unless I'm really lucky (like I have been this week lol). Normally, other people (I board with my mate and his mother) are online lol...
I can't go a week without a computer. Well I can, I just hate doing it. I have been without one for 6 years when our Win95 screwed up, heh.

I heard that satellite latency speed are HORRIBLE. Sometime worse than dialup. that and the fact satellite providers suck.

With more people online, it would also mean Zymic has the potential to have even more members. Let's call them here.

I can't go very long at all. Computers & the internets ftw! The internet has changed the world and will continue to globalize and change the world for ... forever. Pretty soon the world will be covered by WIFI and all cell phones / phones will use the internet to transfer their data. It's the future.

I've been on dialup ever since I had a computer which was 5th grade (9yrs ago), I even went from 56k to 28k and was on 28k for 4 of those years, downloading music and playing America's Army! Now I have 8mb/s, and my RS account is always maxed out

You know, to quote the matrix "Humans are like a virus" We just spread and spread and spread until we can't anymore, then we find a new place to spread our "seed" so I think this might be good as long as there are some people that aren't addicted to the internet. I'm glad that I get bored of being online, but I HAVE to be able to check my email. i don't know why, just do, but thats why I have the gmail app on my phone.

That is true. If you own a site you will have to maintain it else you lose the members. I remember for one week I went to vacation and my inbox was filled with requests and suggestions and its really irritating especially when you write in your sig clearly "DO NOT MESSAGE ME, I'M ON VACATION." I think I've gone about a month once but that was before I got really into making money from the web. I think it was about 3 or 5 years ago when dial-up ran my life. Now the campus internet are awesome and something I really enjoy having.

Hey... some people use the web to find sex...

As for not being able to stay online... OMG, 5 hours top ! i use to web for pretty much everything... and seriously everything... web on the PC but web on the TV and web on the Phone... web everywhere... Well people have no choice... everything is connected to the Web now.. so you can't really be doing something without being online...
Also i have to agree with the "depends if you own a site" ... more sites you own and more time you get stuck over the PC online :/
