Okay I know you're free and that's great. However not being able to use Dreamweaver to connect to a database is pretty frustrating to say the least. And to be really honest, only the techno nerds out there are going to be using a freehost without this facility. Having spent the last few hours trying in vain to connect I am fairly hot under the collar about freehosts! Why isn't it possible to have this facility?

We do not allow remote access to mysql for two reasons, firstly security - access is restricted through specified controllable drivers, and secondly because we provide the database for the purposes of webhosting. If we were to allow remote access we would get people using it as a general purpose database host, including uses completely unrelated and possibly high volume (which would mean a drop in server speed due to unfair balancing of resources).

It's also worth noting that we did not go out and disable remote access, it is actually disabled by default - so I'm not sure many places provide it at all.

How to use a MySQL database?

Many thanks to the Zymic team. I assume it's impossible to differentiate between a user who wants to remote host a database (thereby ripping off someone elses bandwidth) and someone designing in Dreamweaver. I guess there's a workaround, only I'm too incompetent to find it at the moment. However I'm sure I will and hope that my efforts will bear fruit!
