.DS_Store is a hidden directory file for Macs, and absolutely useless. I can guess .~php is a temporary file of some sort which needs renaming, or something thereof. Java applets and mp3s? Neg.

Easier on the surface, more difficult in practice - due to the problems with its security implications. It's not difficult to add filetypes to the allow list, and this is favourable to having problems with legal issues and security just for the sake of convenience.

Yes, they're allowed but we're still amidst discussion on how we plan to handle them. At present, they do not work in their intended context.
Extensions Sycodelic requested (on IRC) have now been allowed, bar '.shtml'.

Just wondering, what's wrong with java applets? They run client-side. There isn't much of a difference between java applets and flash.

Can any admin allow .lng files pls... it is 3rd day i can't install a Cms "DataLife Engine" because i cant upload 2 files adminpanel.lng and wabsite.lng

To answer your question, at the moment http auth isn't enabled, so enabling a file type that relies on it is somewhat misleading. I can envisage that if it is enabled we'll have a number of requests asking why it doesn't work.
The .htaccess issue is being worked on, give it a couple of days and we will give you your file type.
