Mind, body and soul, or so the saying goes...

Soul means squat, so let's take this to mean the mental, physical and spiritual (arguably a subset of the mind, but some argue otherwise) facets of our personality.

Yes I know, we all contain elements of these three existent planes, but if you had to categorise yourself under one banner, which would it be? Which element of your psyche do you have most confidence in and which can you most rely on in your darkest hour?

Try to add banter rather than one-word answers if you can. smile.gif

I'd categorize myself under the mental barrier. I believe I'm more mentally fit then physically fit (which is pretty true, in all accounts). Therefore, I rely on intelligences and wit, more than strength.
IamShipon1988
I really don't know. I'm both mental and physical. I live in my head about half the day, the other half I'm out at the park or partying. Is there a way to be hybrid? I know you said one category so I guess I'll have to go with mental. I think almost all computer "nerds" (nerds = comment not diss) belong in the mental world: the Matrix
Nexus
Meh, the Matrix is overrated and overused. From now on, it shall be known as the Xirtam. XIRTAM! Doesn't sound any better, isn't any better, it's a reversed version of the Matrix. Insteading of doing cool shit, you can't. JUST LIKE REAL LIFE!

Around 80% of my brain is used for sheer randomness and fucking weird stuff I think of on the spot (such as the above and my site; Randomtastic, lol). 19% is used for intellectual power. 1% and less is for other shit such as physical stuff. Which consists mainly of typing, moving my mouse, walking, running, waving long sticks around, more typing, drinking and eating and sleeping.

19% does not sound like much. But my brain is huge. IT'S THE SIZE OF A WHALE WHEN THAT WHALE HAS BEEN REDUCED TO THE SIZE OF A HUMAN BRAIN!

Body - i do work. have no brains and no feelings.

Ass - I sit on my ass all day.

Lol just kidding, I'm more of the psychic type.

- I have no God.
- I am physically weak beyond certain self-destructive activities (drug abuse & promiscuous sex).
- I am pretty much insane. I have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and some of the drugs I do present a very high risk for developing schizophrenia. I'm this close [ ] to literally going psycho on people.

I guess you can say I'm more of a mental person.

True that... But it would have to do with my ideas regarding religion and/or my religious beliefs, correct? I believe in nothing.

Then what, pray tell, does it have to do with?

I like this one:

An inner sense of something greater than oneself. Recognition of a meaning to existence that transcends one's immediate circumstances.

As a literal definition, "concern with things of the spirit".

Wikipedia really has it covered, though: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirituality

Asshole.
just.xTc
So would it have to do with the soul? A sort of ephereal(sp?) kind of thing?
Well, I believe in accepted physics and biology.
Our consciousness, which is what I assume one would believe to be the human soul, is just a device for our brain... Because without consciousness, if we weren't self-aware, there would be no competition. We would not progress as a species.

"Which element of your psyche do you have most confidence in and which can you most rely on in your darkest hour?"

I would have to say Soul in my darkest hour, unless I fell and hit my head or something and forgot who I was, then I wouldnt know then which one to depend on. The Soul to me is something we all share, in a sense. I would find the soul to be somewhat troublesome when the mental side gets its first taste or awareness of it, because the soul could have the persons mental side confused and could cause the person to get physical on themself or another, in their darkest hours. Back in the day, I would have to say none of the above and choose to say a big phu**** gun. But, if theres any problem now, I choose the soul. But lets say, for an example a dark hour could be: walking down an alley at 3:00 in the mourning and you are being extorted out of money. I usually can get the soul side to kick in if I'm aware that the other options wont work. But if running or another physical function is possible, that will be one of the main choices. But if physical is possible in that example, I would choose mental as my first choice, to give a psychological fake out, before I got physical, But if it was any kind of aggravated extortion, I would say the soul would automatically kick in., but anyway, enough rattling on...

What if all we are is Organic AI programmed by society? In that case, I would say that I rely on my mind to define my existence. A neuron is just another type of transistor. Finding meaning in that can be difficult. Sentient Life can be a blessing, or a curse. Damn, now I'm even more confused. lol.

Well as i know people has three elements we it body soul and spirit. witout the body probably were dead or we might say were ghost. if we dont have soul even though we have a body how can it moves were good as dead also but if we dont have spirit yeah we can say people can move , act normal because of our body and soul but witout our spirit we cant leave eternal life.... remember as the lod saying when our old parents commited sin God told they are dead, meaning thier spirit that communicate between God was instatly died .

Mental and Spiritual both have strong spots, but I'd have to categorize myself under Spiritual when it comes to anything life changing. Just mulling over my life, it's hard to think of times I may have been more mindful or physical in how I've transitioned from one of life's hurdles to the next.

However, as for the second question: I hope it wasn't just meant to be an extension of explaining what exactly you were asking in the first question, because I really see them as two separate questions, and as such, I have two separate answers.

So my second answer, as it relates to which I have most confidence in and which I can most rely on in my darkest hour: I really don't see it as a choice. There are so many different scenarios that the encapsulation of myself would automatically assign me to one spot or another. I guess it might have to do with which you have the most confidence in, but in lue of real life scenarios, one will take over and possibly even change over to another in course of action.

Take for example that my darkest hour is what I might feel a life or death matter between myself and police (maybe I'm not mentally processing things the right way). I might initially begin to run... the physical is in control. These cops are fast, I look back and keep running as fast as I can. I'm saying to myself "I wish I could FLY!" but of course, where's this higher power... I can't fly. Am I insane? No. The spiritual want isn't working. So I go to the next best thing. My mind. What do I do? I look around for any way I can thwart these police officers, they're gaining on me. This might call for physical, I've used my mind to come here. Maybe I get away, maybe I don't. Maybe at the end my spiritual side takes over and tells me I'm a lucky SOB.

You know, if your darkest hour is as thrilling as that, you might be jumping all over the place in terms of your existent planes. And just like your spiritual might tell you that you're damn well lucky, the way that the scenario ends and which plane you are on just might have been a matter of luck itself.

I guess at the end of the day though, if I'm using my physical self to out-wrestle, or my mental self to out-wit, I'm probably the kind of guy who allows my spiritual self to give reason or to take delight or whatever else.

How's that for an answer?
Tom
tl;dr
Autistic Elephant
I'm almost completely in the mental category. All of my work is dependent on mental capability. Even the sports I play depend as much on the mind as they do on the body. (Fencing, it's all about knowing when to attack, when to parry, where to attack, etc)
Wolf Tears
I'm definitely mental:

I'm smart. Top of my grade.

I love logic, math, words, and so on; logic puzzles, reading, and writing are the loves of my life. (Okay, as well as computers, Okami (the video game), animals/ecology, climbing on stuff, and... well, I'll shut up now.)

Since other people are putting "random" under here, I suppose I'll put it here, too. I swear, my randomness knows no bounds. See the conversation below.

I'm introspective and a very deep thinker. I like to think about things, to consider the options, to wonder. I don't want to know how; I want to know why.

That conversation I mentioned, between me and my friend CC:
QUOTE
Me: I like cheese.
CC: ... Why?
Me: Because bricks are hard and they hurt when they get dropped on you toes.
CC: ... ... Oookay...
Me: Yes, it is a shame dolphins aren't orange, isn't is?
CC: If you say so...?
Me: Meow.
CC: Okay, now you're just being wierd.
Me: So the other day, I'm talking to Demetra, and I'm telling her about thebook I'm reading, and she cuts me off to tell me that I'm rambling, and I- POTATOES!
CC: Where? *glances around* There are potatoes here?
Me: Oh, no, I just felt like saying that. Apple-banana-chocolate-
CC: TEARS!
Me: *cough*

I'm torn between mental/spirtual. I really think these two are inextricably linked, in my opinion anything spritual stems from the mind. I think the mind is very powerful and something we have yet to really discover or investigate scientifically, relative to the physical world.
Sean223
I definitely am more mental, although really spiritual is kind of linked to that.

So very true. It is amazing just how complex our minds are. Not to dis the physical side of life, but it just seems to me that the mental and spiritual are much more intricate and worth investing in. Of course, without the physical side there is hardly a life at all.
King Tut
I think i cant list myself under one of the 3, maybe i can re-arrange them:
1- Spiritual: feelings, love, religion, they do affect me so strongly, so i think they come at the first place
2- Mental and Physical: i always rely to them most of the time, but still keeping in mind number 1 (spiritual).
Czar of Fishies
I can't really separate the three, to be honest. Take jogging, for example. When I do it, it releases all of these chemicals in me that help me think and feel things better. So I start to think about things. Ideas for inventions, stories, theories. And from there my mind delves into these other important questions, having to do with spirituality and love and other things of that sort, and all of these scenarios where I lose something precious (and thus, how important it is to value those things while you still have them). So by the time I come back, I have this profound and renewed sense of appreciation for everything in my life, and I can trace it back to the decision to go for a run earlier on.

I'm sure there are better examples. Sex is a good one (it's physical, but when done right, it is spiritual as well -- and you need to be pretty intelligent to keep things interesting).

Any one of the three areas is pretty empty by itself, if you think about it.
Luke
I don't like spirituality. Makes me think of religion. Call it something else and you might just get my attention wink.gif

I think I'm more mental... but I'm pretty physical too... just incredibly out of shape smile.gif

I took this intellectual quiz, that was FAR above the retarded quizes "Which twighlight character are you" or whatever. It dubbed me as a "scientist", a free thinker.

So I am Mental. In every sense of the word ^_~
Ponting
I would say i am more mentally fit than physically. and i quiet like this situation, because your mentality is what will accompany you through out your life. your physical appearance may change, but your mental beauty is what will go with you everywhere. i do believe you need to be physically fit to adapt in life, but the most important thing is to get the mental peace and cross the mental barriers. smile.gif
