Full Version: Computers Are Crap! & A Podcast

Strong words from somebody who makes a living from supporting PC's and networks, but true none the less!
Isn't it about time that we wake up to the fact that PC's are just tools? You don't exactly see the average carpenter bragging about his latest claw-hammer, do you? As a PC is just another tool, why get euphoric about it?
Computers ought to be about people. In particular, about enabling people to do the same things better and allowing them to do new things.
The moment anybody starts to lose track of that simple fact, they have gone off the tracks.
So, all you techies out there, take note, or become extinct. It's that simple.

Actually, I have seen examples of people talking proudly about a new power tool, if it's something interesting. It's not just computers, and if he's trying to say that it is then I'd say he was simply wrong from the start. You'd be surprised what people can be elitist about.

I see a computer as tool myself. Because that's what it is. It's just a damn useful tool that is needed for loads of different things.

For one, you can't do web design of paper, can you? The internet only resides on a computer. You need one to view it. Same with things like graphic design and digital art. It's called DIGITAL art for a reason. However, I don't say my COMPUTER has the skills to do this stuff. I say I do.

I use computers for entertainment just like I would a television. I see people bragging about new gadgets all the time.

Hey, nice topic! Here are my own thoughts.

First off, a 5000 Gb CPU with 10,000 Gb RAM and 200-inch monitor with touch-screen technology and all that fancy tech specs are of absolutely no value if all the user does is gaze fondly at all that equipment and drool.

Computers do not animate, create, write or compose – people do.

Computers are machines that are there for a reason – for people to use them [in whatever way] to create, animate, compose, write or do any of the million other things that can be done with them [and no, drooling at your set-up isn’t one of those things].

Didn’t people do all these things before there were any computers?

You only have to look at a Walt Disney film, a Henry Matisse painting, Michelangelo’s Pieta; read a Shakespearean tragedy/comedy to realise that the only thing computers [at least as far as creativity is concerned] have done is speed up the process of creation and in some cases, make it less exhausting.

Whereas every frame of a Walt Disney/Loony tunes cartoon [around 24 frames per second] had to be hand-drawn earlier, they are now generated digitally – though you still have to create the important or the ‘key’ frames manually.

There is no computer/software where you simply say [or type] “Yo, I want this masterpiece of modern art/music/literature and I want it NOW!” and the next thing you know is the computer/software is whirring away merrily and PRESTO – a new piece of work appears in front of your eyes.

So people create things [like they always have] and computers merely help them do it faster. Take away the human element, and it’s just an expensive box that just sits there…

Yes, everybody does it. For anything, not just computer peripherals (those this is what I generally brag about lol, that and my near-L337 skills I don't have). People brag about their new TV sets, DVD players, MP3 players, sports equipment, CLOTHING (this probably nearly tops the fucking lot of 'em) and loads more.

Well when a new computer does manage to do the same things better, why not get excited? The claw hammer has been perfected long ago, but I'm sure any carpenter you talk to would love to discuss new tools. Hey, I bought a laser level for christmas with a digital readout and it entertained a few people for a short while.
Of course they are tools, and there's nothing wrong with getting excited about new tools.
You don't think being able to watch a movie by holding a device in the palm of your hand is cool?
