i remember the geocities scene... laugh.gif

anyway it really is a profession, because you can make BIG money...... Not saying that doing anything that makes BIG money is a profession, but web design and development have come a long way.

I can't answer any of the poll answers yet. I'm doing web design as a hobby at the moment, but I'm planning to do it as a career as well.

hobby. i don't want to be anything to do with websites when i'm older. ><
there are more secure jobs than freelancing.
e.g. doctor lawyer architect...

I do it mainly for fun, but also make some money with it. I would never consider it as a profession though. Just not my cup of tea. wink.gif

You don't have to freelance to be a web designer. You can always work as the web designer for a specific company.

Do it for mainly a hobby..

Currently is still something to do in my free time or when I'm just so bored and have nothing to do or I just want to do it.

But if it's possible, someday I like to make it a profession.

In general I think it can be both... it depends.
Hsiaminghung
For me, it is just a hobby..for fun.
sometime u have to learn more skill in your life, even it just a small skill...

Hmm...It really depends on the person really. For me it's both a hobby and a profession. I really enjoy making websites and coding; but I also make my living off of it (and pay for my loans).

Hell, you don't even have to work for a company anymore, lol. If you're really good at web design and programming (and have a creative mind) you can literally make your own online business. I've seen it done.

Personally, I wouldn't mind if web design/development were a source of freelance revenue -- it is immensely interesting and offers unique ways of presenting information/content -- that no one form of conventional communication/media can match. But doing it all the time [or rather doing only that] could get a little tiresome after a while, when it becomes just another 'job' and not a fun thing or an interesting challenge...

I have it as a job with Jorsek Software relating to website design and implementation and let me tell you something...I am tired of it. LOL I am tired of making websites. At first I found it real fun but the more and more I code, I start to get a little irritated. But it is fun none-the-less (most of the time) fun. I really hate it how I make really stupid mistakes and it takes me hours to figure out that mistake. Gah

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the job. I'm just tired of designing sites because of the small mistakes I make while coding. In CSS, I accidentally add a comma instead of a semicolon and that causes my style to go haywire. Other than that, it is fun none-the-less.

It's mainly a hobby but i have a few poster things around the harbour and I get a couple of 100 from them now and again smile.gif But started as a hobby and im gaining money from it so ill have to go with last one smile.gif

I think I know what it feels like. I've got the feeling too [although not in this web-design business]... smile.gif

Hahaha geocities, i remember smile.gif

I started by making a simple site out of geocities and i liked it a lot, but than i understood geocities was not the end... i mean there are only a certain things you can do with geocities...

Than ofcourse i was a leader of a big clan (50members) playing Quake, RtCW, ET, COD... and started to make them a site...
and than my uncles site
than a friends site
than mine,
than coded some of the myspaces i knew

and than someone asked me to make him a site for some $$$ and than i realised Webdesign and Dev was something cool and really NEW in France so i decided to push it up, made more and more earned a but more $$$ and right now i am looking forward to open a small company in france because there a serious way to make some BIG $$$ here... there is no leading company out of this in France and many people need this.

Started as a hobby but most likely turned into a profession.

I do websites for a hobby, I'm a self employed mobile dj by trade so I decided to learn html etc to save money rather than paying a company to do my websites.

I'm also looking into courses in web design etc in the near future as its something that I love, if im stressed or something I just sit and work on a website really mellows me out in some strange way lol
