So I know that to get mail() activated you must pay $10. I will plan on purchasing a .com and applying it to my site here on zymic. I also planned on setting a subdomain directed towards my free forums.

Here is what my question pertains to:

I also planned on using Google Apps to allow my members to have NAME@mydomain.com.

I thought that was all fine, until I saw something about for $5 dollars, you guys would set up an MX record for google apps. Do I need this? I am not really clear on what an MX record even is, but I didn't think I would need to do this because I wouldn't be sending or recieving any mail on the actual site that is hosted on zymic, it would just be sent to @mydomain.com which I plan on purchasing totally separate from zymic.

The 5 Bucks really isn't an issue, I just need to know if I will need to purchase this MX Record or not. By what I have tried to look up on this, I wouldn't think I need too. Because I plan on using godaddy, and I would set the MX records at Godaddy, and it wouldn't even touch any of the Zymic servers. Correct me if I am wrong.

well since your going to be using ns servers to add your own custom domain to our system, we would take control over it and help you host your site. So you wouldn't be able to add MX Records and NS servers at the same time.

Now mail() allows you to send e-mail from your site to an e-mail address and MX Records allows you to have custom e-mail accounts on your site. We use Google Apps for that witch will give you 50 e-mail address for you right off the bat.

That kind of confuses me. (about the MX thing) You are saying that you can't have both NS and MX records? that sounds weird that you couldn't have both.

Idk, but the way I thought domains worked, is that I will buy a domain, like mydomain.com from godaddy, then I will tell godaddy to point the domain to the zymic servers and then I will go to my control panel and add it.

Then when I do the Google Apps Email, I will add a new MX record to my domain to Gmail's server.

Nothing to do with zymic's server's on the email part.

Right?

the reasons that you can not do ns and mx records at the same time is cause you need to use a records for it.

Now you need to purchase MX Records from us to use it

Sorry for dragging this on, but I really don't understand why I would need to use A Records. On all of Google's pages, it never says anything about A records, and it even says that it does not support A records for Google Apps. It also says that I need change the MX record in my domain host, which would be godaddy.

I would understand if I wanted an email like name@mysite.zymichost.com, because then the MX record would have to go through zymic, but I am wanting a name@mydomainname.com where the MX record would point to mydomainame.com which I purchased with GoDaddy.

Dan helped me with this on IRC. Solved.

Hi,
I will try and break it down a little simpler for you. If you want to send emails from your PHP scripts, you need PHP mail to be assigned to your account. However, if you would like to send and receive emails via an email client, you will be needing to purchase MX records.

Now for the explaination that will make it clear for you. smile.gif
If your domain is currently not being used and hasn't been assigned anywhere, your domain is actually resolving to the GoDaddy name servers. This makes your domain host, GoDaddy.
If you wish to use our hosting service and assign your custom domain here, Zymic becomes your domain host (because it is now assigned here). So to use your domain here with an email service, you will need to purchase MX records. Summing up, your domain host is where your domain is resolving to.

Hope this clears it all up for you.
