I new to web design/html/css but I'm working on a website and I want to have pictures on the left and descriptions on the right. I want to do something similar to this:

About Us -

My logic was left justifying the pictures and right justifying the text but they show up on different horizontal lines, and I also noticed that their webpage was using javascript. Any help or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated!

why dont you do it using tables or div tags.
in case of tables, set boundary as zero.
in case of div, assign properties in css style sheet and create partition.
