Haha... Vista wouldn't even be able to run on that.

That computer needs to be trashed and you should fork out the cash for a new one. You can get one 4 times faster than that for only $250.

Why? So I can run Vista which requires four times the resources? Anyways, Your point is taken. But money is tight and I don't really need a new Box. Sooner or later I will probably need a good IDE though. So I'll have to upgrade.

Actually you could still run XP and would be able to run modern software and play the newer games.

you're right of course. But I'm not much into games with lots of animation. My computer can kick my ass at chess, that's about the only game I spend much time on. Being a programmer, I would probably benefit from a good IDE, which requires more that 512 MB. If I could, I'd buy more RAM, but my PIII can't handle more than 512MB. Anyways I know I could do better for a few hundred bucks. One of these days, I'm on no hurry.

It raises an interesting question though. Frankly I think ever cheaper hardware drives software development. When you can buy 1GB of RAM for $100, then there is not a lot of economic incentive to design lean, efficient software or operating systems. A lot of the software these days is bloated and overloaded crap. Imagine needing 2GB Ram to run Windows! I miss the good old days when lean and efficient programming was an art form in itself.

I've got an old-ish overclocked Pentium 4 - 1GB. Have a look at the picture to see whats happened with the 3.3v rail. When the voltage gets below 2.4 volts, it powers off!
And now that little connector has totally broken off - and it appears to be the only one supplying the ~3.3v volts.

just doing a few of my computers (As I have 8 of them right now)

Main:
Core 2 Duo E8400 usually OC'ed to 3.6 GHz
4 GB Corsair XMS2 Dominator PC8500 DDR2 RAM
ASUS P5KC motherboard
ATI Radeon HD 4890 1 GB
250 GB HDD for OS, Games and programs
640 GB HDD for the rest (ie. pr0n:P)
Windows 7

Experimental server, Dell Poweredge 2600:
1x 2.4 GHz Intel Xeon Socket 603 (Room for 1 more, got the extra voltage regulator and is hunting for another CPU and heatsink)
1 GB ECC RAM (DDR1)
5x 37 GB 15.000 RPM HDDs (currently in RAID0)
SCSI 640 controller with 128 MB battery-backed cache
And the best of it all: I got it for free (and no, I didn't steal it... damn thing weighs about 82 lbs, but I did lift it by myself... couldn't even hold a pencil for days afterward)
Only reason i'm not using it for hosting though, is that it's really noisy.... and it stands in my bedroom tongue.gif

Laptop
ASUS F3Ka AP014C
2 GHz AMD Turion X2
2 GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD2600
Windows 7
Mainly used for school and stuff like that... Still needs some configuration and probably a RAM upgrade when I get the money for it.
fred n yourface
my internet access:
old Compaq Presario 1244 laptop
AMD K6 366 MHz
160 MB RAM (fully loaded!)
a whopping 4 GB hard drive
XP Pro SP1, consumes about 60 MB RAM at startup for Windows leving me about 100 MB to use.
won't stream video, but gets me about whatever else I need to look at.
before you all die  ing, it was free; cost me a whole $11 for a CMOS battery and 128 MB RAM.

won't let my desktop touch the 'net so it won't dog down any further than stock Windows bloat.
it's super-new by my standards and well over 3 thousand times faster (literally) than the computers I learned to program on;
Dell Optiplex GX280
around 3 GHz hyperthreaded Pentium IV processor
2 GB RAM
i think a 40 GB hard drive
XP Pro SP3

Laugh if you want, but the Dell junker only cost me $90 shipped; I just had to fab a case and rig a power supply to make it work.

I can't imagine even wanting to run Vista or Win7, XP is plenty bloated enough but I can't get much software to run under Win '98 anymore (snicker). I'd go to some flavor of Linux if I wanted a new OS.
See, some of us are so cheap we only use old hardware... "And we liked it! 'Cause that's the way it was."

Not a bad setup! Your specs were of utmost interest to me as I'd used to be a rather obsessive fan over EPoX mainboards. They had since gone out of business apparently but judging by the name they'd re-established under the name 'SUPoX' [Same altercaps name with the lowercase 'o' and the MCP naming convention]. Seems I might start looking into that brand now if they are still distributing semi-decent boards. Knowing they're still around just brought a smile to my face. ^^
