How to set-up forums for your website

Pick the forum that best suits you

There are many more types of forums but those are the top 3 that I like to use depending on the type of site and look I want.
Download the package, and make sure its a stable package not a beta one.
Unzip the package and upload it to your site in a new directory called whatever you want (possible /forum/)
Once you have finished uploading it all, you should go to your favorite internet browser and go to where you forum is (example.com/forum/)
It should lead you to the installation part. These 3 forums come with explanations on what to fill out but I will have screenshots and a explanation from
my own head up here soon.

Questions are welcome.

Hope my small guide was somewhat of help, probably not yet, but should be alot better when I start updating it with new and useful information.

Step1.Go into MYSQL managment and create, new database, and new user.
Step2. Find the files you uploaded belonging to phpbb, and you should find settings.php, open it with the editor
Step3. Put in your databse name and user name along with your password you just created in MYSQL.
Step4. Put in your URL ie: http://mysite.zxq.net/forum/install.php
Step5. Fill in the same information DB, ussername, password, and hopefully you should be on your way!.

Anyway hope this helps
Genesis.

There are plenty of tutorials on the web. It's a little different than the other forums-you have to configure the settings manually using a text editor.

Is woltlab gmbh lite supported with zymic?

It's a PHP forum that requires also a Mysql database so I don't know...
NaRzY
I think you need to go into this more and make it a little more detailed for the users that are new to most of this. It's an ok start though.

Jacob.
SuperGreen
Any chance someone could add a little more detail to this topic? Screenshots would be a bonus!

My forum is fully uploaded and I can access it by going to /phpBB3/index.php.

I have added my own domain, but it goes to my main directory which gives me an error that I don't have the permission to access it. Can anyone please tell me how to make my domain go to the /phpBB3/index.php?
NaRzY
Change your domain in the Administrator Control Panel.

phpbb3

I uploaded it created sqldatabase name and stuff

go to the install url thing

I get that Congrgulations, visit zymic thing
Davey90r
If you want help you have to give us your site's address.

You must have installed the forum into a folder instead of the root directory, probably: yoursite.vndv.com/phpbb3

Jdb19
PHPBB3.0 problem with install

What do i need to do?

Files and Directories

Required - In order to function correctly phpBB needs to be able to access or write to certain files or directories. If you see “Not Found” you need to create the relevant file or directory. If you see “Unwritable” you need to change the permissions on the file or directory to allow phpBB to write to it. Where can i do that??

cache/:
Found, Unwritable

files/:
Found, Unwritable

store/:
Found, Unwritable

Optional files and directories

Optional - These files, directories or permission settings are not required. The installation system will attempt to use various techniques to create them if they do not exist or cannot be written to. However, the presence of these will speed installation.

config.php:
Found, Unwritable

images/avatars/upload/:
Found, Unwritable

Red-Spiral
go to these files and click on edit permission and make sure the box w is ticked
Davey90r
Jdb19: Safe mode cannot be turned off but if you read it says it is optional anyway, it is only required off for certain features for offsite avatar hosting so you can run phpbb3 fine without it off.

Apart from that you both have the same problem - file permissions.

If you are using FTP then right-click the given files and set the permissions to writeable by all.
If you are using the file manager than edit permission and tick all the boxes like Red-Spiral said.
Red-Spiral
If you need someone to do a fourm for you, just ask me.

There's not supposed to be a database with the name phpbb_

That's just the prefix for the tables when the installation is complete. Did your download come with instructions on how to install it? If it did, you might want to look at it - that's how I installed my forum, but I'm not using phpBB.

Make sure that the user that you created for the forum has access to the database that the forum will be using or else it won't work.

But I'm not the best person to come to for help when it comes to this kind of stuff.

The only forum that I've successfully installed manually is XMB. Sorry.

I put
DSN: Localhost
port: 21
database name: gvtrpg_gvtrpg3
Database username: gvtrpg
database password:
Prefix for tables in database: phpbb_

Red-Spiral
the user name should be gvtrpg_gvtrpg

if that dont work try gvtrpg_gvtrpg3

You probably have a username that is too long, so it automatically shortens it and it doesn't work.
Trippin7464
The limit for all mysql usernames and databases is 16 characters including the underscore _

Therefore

thebestsiteever_forum Is way too long, because you can't even shorten it to 16 characters
thebestsiteever_ is 16 characters in and of itself.

Therefore your sitename needs to be shorter

bestsiteever_bb would work because it's 15 characters.
swordz
He's actually mentioned what username he's trying - the-lost-explore. There are 2 problems with this username.

First, it is not in the correct form for a database username on a zymic server - the correct form is sitename_randomstring. This makes me think that you have not set up a MySQL Database.

Secondly, the-lost-explore is 16 characters long, which means that by the time you've got the-lost-explore_, you're on 17 characters, which is too long. I suggest you create another site, e.g thelostexplore.vndv.com. You can keep your previous site, but must set up your databases on your new site - it is possible to link between them like that. Use a database name like thelostexplore_d and a username like thelostexplore_u.

swordz

What's the quickest way to transfer every file from my old site, into my new one?
swordz
Use an ftp client, such as filezilla.
