Full Version: [hosting] Adverts On 404 And 403 Pages ...
Zymic Webmaster Forums > News and Announcements > News and Announcements
Jack
Hello,

We're thinking about putting advertisements on 404 (page not found) and 403 (forbidden) pages located at:
http://www.hosting.zymic.com/404.jsp
http://www.hosting.zymic.com/403.jsp

What are your views about this?
Bear in mind you can make your own custom 404/403 page using htaccess ...

And please note we will never put ads on your actual website pages.

Thanks
Mephiles
I think it would be a great idea, but you must make it more clear that Zymic puts no ads on people's sites. Afterall, it's confusing to see text that says, "We do not put ads on your site" and bellow it there is an ad.
Trice
Thats a good idea! And i agree with Mephiles though.
After all those pages are probably come across a few times by people, so why not make use of them
bezz
do it.
Scapelord00
I don't know if you should do it. I have my custom error pages 404, 403, 402, 401 and 505 but for the ones that do not???

Maybe you should make a poll about this and see what the majority wants. It would be contradictory saying "free web hosting ad-free" and then placing adds in the error pages besides being the zymic ones, but those pages are going to be seen when someone is truying to access to a hosted site.

My point is... Do you really need to put the adds?? Is that going to help you in something?? If that is going to improve the service by earning you some cash, be my guest but if not, then do not put them...

Thats my opinion wink.gif

I don't believe we have anything but 404 and 403 customised.

Is it really contradictory? the error pages only show up if someone either accesses a page that doesn't exist or directories / websites which are forbidden, so it won't effect anyone with a properly functioning website.
Scapelord00
I have all my error pages customized, i would sohw you but the server is down. The came with the CMS im using, i just had to modify the htaccess of my CMS.

It wont affect any site, you're right, but i think that if you put some ads, the hosting service would look just as the other free hosting services, non-professional. Having a free hosting service "add-free" is what makes the difference...
J-Seb
I wouldn't mind, its an error page xD

Speaking of that, how can we cuzstomize our own 404 page?
machine
Good idea, that.
Mark
I vote do it. You're giving away free webspace, I think it's generous that you don't put any ads on their main pages. They should be able to handle a few text or non-moving banner ads on error pages, it hurts no one and helps you generate revenue providing everyone with a better service b/c you can now buy more servers and such. It'd be a great business decision to do so IMO.
Rayn
Hey if it helps you guys out, I'm all for it. This is a great service. Yes, the server has downtime. But it's FREE! Beggars can't be choosers right? At least you're asking us our opinions. I give ya props for that.

I say do it. Whatever benefits you and keeps adds off my home page can't be a bad thing.

Well if you use .htaccess for error pages, you can re-direct the visitors to your own error page where the Zymics error page will not show. I believe what Jack is talking about is putting ads on the error pages that are displayed on those sites who does not have their own setup. Jack or any other admin, feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
Tunnan
i whouldn't mind it i could even make so people can support my website by pressing the ads when they come across em (if they ever do XD)
kidnappedmole
i say do it up its not like they would be posted on our sites pages but you guys need money to suport this amazing hosting some how i would hate to have it stoped i say go for it
EMOruffino
Do it.
Hurricane Andrew
If the ads will appear just on those error pages, it's just OK with me... I won't mind it really. Zymic is giving us free hosting with no ads on our sites, so I guess ads on error pages isn't a big deal. If those ads on error pages would help Zymic in improving it's services, GO AHEAD.

There are some who are not in favor with the ads idea so why not make it an option? Let those who want to make their own customized error pages. Place the ads on those who are in favor with it.
SerenitiSFV
It depends on what kind of ads you're talking about. If it's a bunch of those "Get a FREE Flatscreen TV! All you have to do is spend six hours filling out forms and pay to participate in 16 offers that you really don't want that will each cost you an arm and a leg and the TV is yours!"

If they're not "scammy," flashing, blinking, or otherwise trashy-looking then I don't think they'll detract from the professional look we're striving for on our sites.

And hey, if we don't like them, we can just create custom 404 and 403 pages. This is a great service and I'm sure it's not cheap to keep it running, so do what you have to to increase your revenues as long as you don't put ads on our actual sites.

its an excellent idea. It would be helpful for the owner(s) of the site so that this free host can stay running smile.gif

It is really a good idea, I agree with your decision and thanks for the hosting!!! It´s a excellent service!!

Thanks very much.

You´re the number 1 cool.gif

You provide free ad-less hosting, so why not? Since we have the option to make our own 403 and 404 pages, I don't see a problem with it. If the user doesn't want it, they can make their own page.

Yeah. gud idea, and do it
Luke Spragg
Good idea to me as well. Just like others have said, I would just make sure you specify that you are able to change the error pages and that their actual web site will not contain any of your ads.
Paranoid
Agreed. Jack - do it.
ur domian question

This isn't really the place to post about your domain problems. Try the thread already created for that. You can still work on your site in the meantime using the subdomain while you are waiting for admin to update it.

Its a good idea, and it doesn't hurt anyone =D
the hosting can only improve with it
Liqfan
Good idea, I don't think anyone would have an actually problem with it if you state there are no ads except for the error pages or something.
emmanicole
If that's what you guys need to do to keep Zymic running, so be it. I'm of course not going to complain about it, it's a very reasonable request seeing as that we have the option to override it. If I had one suggestion it would be hopefully the ads won't be too obnoxious? (Ie: huge, flashy)
Dave
Do it... no reason why you shouldn't.
W3B-D3SIGN3R
I have my own error pages too, but maybe you can put adverts on my error pages happy.gif
