Some people here seem to be having a bit trouble installing SMF,]. Well I'm here to help.

First of all, if you haven't already done so, go to
http://www.simplemachines.org/ and get the full version of SMF.
Now run your FTP program ( see
http://www.zymic.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=59 for info on FTP)
Once you have your FTP program open upload the SMF files to your site.
Once that is done, click on MySQL database in your control panel and make a database. You can name your database anything you like as long as you remember it.
Optional: To make things easy make the database username same as your database name. (less to remember)
Now press create username with the password. (Whatever you want, but remember it!)
Now once you've done all that, go back to your SMF folder in your file manager and click edit permissions on the following files:
attachments
avatars
Packages
Packages/installed.list
Smileys
Themes
agreement.txt
Settings.php
Settings_bak.php
There will be a few boxes checked with some letters next to them. Make sure each of these files have "W" checked and click OK. Make sure that this is done to all of the above files. like so

Finally run "install.php" by doing yourname.zzl.org/wherever_you_copied_files/install.php and follow the steps! This should be pretty easy!
After all this, delete the install.php and go to your forums and do whatever you want.

Thanks , Swintell
If you have any questions please post here and I'll try to help the best that I can.

i just left install path blank when i installed it. i forget the installation process but i think you would enter:
Server: database name?
Username: database username?
Password: database username password?
Install path: it seemed to find it on its own
Again, i am not sure about this because i havent installed smf in a while. but give it a shot and see if it works

Hope it goes well. SMF didnt cause too many problems.
Might want to add a link to the installation manual on the smf site in your tutorial. so if people have a ton if issues then it will be most likely answered there. it also gives all of the information that you need to put in at places...

I had the same problem.
Got it working by...
Setting the permissions manually on these files and folders:
attachments
avatars
Packages
Packages/installed.list
Smileys
Themes
agreement.txt
Settings.php
Settings_bak.php
and in the database control panel:
I deleted the username I had made and put in a new one the same as the database name.

Open up the Packages folder in your ftp client and change the permissions on the installed.list file

More info, you can use the help documents at the SMF site

just rename it. and if it doesnt let you on the file manager rename it through your ftp client. deleting it will cause you to have to re-upload in install directory if you need to reinstall smf in the future.
lord ratt
May 8 2008, 02:46 PM
have tried renaming and i get the following:
Error renaming file
as i stated in previous post. its the warning i get in my forum thats of concern to me. not the file.
i will see if there is a patch on the smf forum that might remove the warning from my forum.
thanks for the suggestions.
edit: i just tried deleting install.php using my ftp client it was successful
thanks wozzym for the "workaround" solution (i feel the color returning to my hair). lol

Have you created your database from your Zymic control panel?
You get those settings when you create a database.

@SwintellSoft: Good guide!!! I just think it needs a tad more depth.
If you guys want, I have alot of years experience with MySQL and PHP (including a lot of the forum systems out there) and I will put all this into a PDF file for you's to read and it will have all about file permissions and using SMF.
Post your replies and whether you would like it.
It could become an offical ZCP document if the Administrators would like to.
Jacob.

URL,
Use the first one on this page:
http://www.simplemachines.org/download/(I actually used the 1.1.4 package and upgraded to 1.1.5, but that is no longer necessary)
Its a slow and troubled FTP connection on Zymic
Fortunately Dreamweaver reported the files it missed.
I found Dreamweaver could handle the time-outs and reconnects if I loaded the folders individually!
Uploading the SMF (and MKportal) files took almost 2 days!

The MySQL Database is not working. I typed all of the correct info, and even tried wording it differently like 20 times and still wouldn't work.
I also tried making new databases and still no dice.
All the information is typed properly and this is the error I get...
The installer was unable to access the "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" database. With some hosts, you have to create the database in your administration panel before SMF can use it. Some also add prefixes - like your username - to your database names.
Please help before I get angry, turn green, and start destroying my town.
Please help.
