If you want to do what the teacher is looking for, try Gulliver's Travels, Pride and Prejudice, Robinson Crusoe, Great Expectations or of course Hamlet. They are the most famous, and all British.
Actually the teacher said that we are allowed to choose graphic novels.
V for Vendetta is written by Alan Moore who is in fact English, the teacher even recommended his work.
