Full Version: Stop! Don't Rip Your Music Cd, Its Stealing!

I just don't know these days whether to laugh or cry at the state of the music industry and its views on piracy.

QUOTE
Gabriel asked if it was wrong for consumers to make copies of music which they have purchased, even just one copy. Pariser replied, "When an individual makes a copy of a song for himself, I suppose we can say he stole a song." Making "a copy" of a purchased song is just "a nice way of saying 'steals just one copy'," she said.

Wah wah wah. The sooner the record industry dies, the better. Like charging $16 a cd isn't jacking consumers. With much improved recording technology, teamed up with the internet, there is no need for a record industry. Artists now have the opportunity to promote their band themselves using such services as myspace and can sell their music directly on iTunes. With the death of the record industry, bands will be able to gain their fame by word of mouth, not based on who signed them. With less megastars, there is more room for moderately successful bands. Shouldn't bands/performers make their living by performing anyway?
Jack
Well, in years to come I think we will see a decrease in manufactured bands and artists, those whole rely solely on their record labels to help make them music.

If I was in a band which had some promise, I wouldn't worry about money, I would worry about promotion. I would give my music away for FREE, make a big thing about it, have a custom website, tell people to download it from bit-torrent, etc, if you are popular enough you will generate a lot of viral attention which will never backfire.

Piracy will never stop, and IMO, this is so bloody stupid. Copying your OWN music that you PAID FOR and using it for INDIVIDUAL USE and NOT giving it away is NOT stealing, IMO anyway...

If however, you make copies and give 'em away or sell them, then it IS piracy.

EDIT: My mate just said this - "Wouldn't the music industry be pirating their own music since their making million of copies? tongue.gif"

Record companies are just liars.

I cant remember, but one company did a viral thing were they put a whole album on jump drives and placed them in NY bathrooms. And when they found those songs on the internet, they got all pissy. I mean what do you expect?

I mean pirating music is really free publicity. I mean sure you can pirate a cd, but you cant pirate a t-shirt, or a live experience at a concert. And thats where they get the real money.

lets see:

General Admission Tickets To A7X: $65.00
1 t-shirt, 1 hoody, 1 promo CD: $80.00
Pirating a $12.99 CD and getting fined $1000000: PRICELESS!

I believe it was NIN who did that.
People do pirate t-shirts, but to sell them.

Just remember that music existed before this notion that Artists live off of album sales. And back then it was much more difficult to get your name out. Today it is cake for anyone to have access to your music, and if it is good, people will listen. I love the term viral, as it is exactly how bands should get their fame, not by a record label. The record industy is an aging dinosaur.

My friend has LimeWire Pro and I just used his version so I got it free and I only use it for music, and it hasnt let me down yet.

If your downloading songs use iMesh. It's actually legal because some songs still have copyrights.... Don't quite understand how that works but hey....

And definition of stealing: to take something without the owners permission.

Therefore when you BUY a CD, and it isn't stealing, which also means that burning it isn't either. You did LEGALLY pay for it, and now you own it, do whatever you want with it...

exactly, my friends mother (ha!) hates pirating, i remember along time ago in HS when i downloaded HL2 illegaly, she almost killed me! But she lets me make copies of all of her DVDS and CDs, because she PAID for them.
Nexus
What screwy logic. She won't let you or anyone else download stuff but she'll let you copy CDs and DVDs which is pirating, just the same. Just because you pay for something, doesn't mean you own the rights to it.

You own the RIGHT to use that CD and whatever software lies on it. You DON'T however, own the full rights to it which would allow you to copy it and distribute it for free or otherwise.

I believe the law is that you can make 1 copy for backup purposes.
Azzakio
but the thing is why do people copy cd's in the first place????

if you payed for a cd with "your" money the why give it to people for free when you had to pay?
i mean if you sell pirated copies then thats a little better because your getting money back, but who in there right mind would buy a cd/dvd off the street when they could just go to a cd/dvd store and buy an official copy...

also if we arn't meant to RIP or BURN music cd's then why do we have that feature in windows media player and itunes??

Phex isn't so bad. I'm borrowing, not stealing. ohmy.gif

@Jack & bezz, you guys are on the money. I agree with what you guys are saying.

I don't know how much it costs to make an album or to rent out a recording studio but im sure if you wanted to, you could do it on your own pc.. maybe lower quality than a real studio but good enough to give out to the public via a website. If people like somones music, its not going to matter if their signed on to a major label. They can make a label themselves if they wanted to, swollen members for example own battleaxe records.

Or you could join the revolution:

Yes, I dislike the band, but I have to give them respect for cutting out the label, having one is pointless when you are a huge success.
Ziprock
wouldn't the band get more money if they didn't have a label? (if they were a huge hit)
