Not really complaining, since this is a free host and most free hosts don't offer .htaccess, but mod_rewrite would be nice.

This is disabled so people aren't using the hosting purely for file hosting.

...means your login info is incorrect.
Recheck your FTP username and password.
The host should be: username.server.com (i.e fun.zxq.net or fun.vndv.com; depends on your site's URL)
Username is your URL without .server.com (i.e if your host is fun.vndv.com, then your username is fun)
Password is your password.

Some one tell me why this is not allowed:

CODE
# Force www version - OK
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]

# Force domain root Homepage without index.php - OK
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^.*/index.php
RewriteRule ^(.*)index.php$ http://www.{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]
RewriteRule ^index.html$ /index.php  [R=301,L]

Would be nice to make my site search engine friendly. I really don't see why this would compromise any? Was wondering why is this not permitted.

Is the PATH_INFO server variable available?

And can I use the .htaccess file to force a mimetype for a file without an extension?

What are you trying to do, and what error are you getting? The contents might also be helpful.

Good News
Well, it's 500 Internal Server Error!!
I can set the password before but not now....
swordz
500 error probably means you've made a mistake in your htaccess. Is it possible to have a look at your code?

Hi, I am new and wanted to set up .htaccess and .htpasswd.

1) I created .htaccess and placed in the directory I wanted to protect : http://myweb.vndv.com/member/

2) I then created .htpasswd and placed in the same directory(Or should I put it in the root directory?)

My .htaccess file:
AuthType Basic
AuthName http://myweb.vndv.com/member/
AuthUserFile http://myweb.vndv.com/.htpasswd

require valid-user

When I tried to access the member directory, the authentication did pop up, but after I typed in the username and password, the box will not go away.
I cannot access member subdirectory.

Can somebody help me? My .htpasswd is in the form "user:password". Should password be encrypted?

Thanks All who will help me!

NB: http://myweb.vndv.com is just made up only. Please do not access it. But my problem is REAL. Pls help. 8-(
Ed
Yes, your password should be encrypted, this should help : http://home.flash.net/cgi-bin/pw.pl

If the username / password is incorrect it won't go away until you click cancel.

Hi there, I am new to Zymic, and I find it's features very attractive. I just want to ask: can I have my own custom 404 and 403 error pages using .htaccess? Thanks!
swordz
Yes, this is allowed.

hi,

i uploaded my site. it's uuuq.com server. the site requires mod_rewrite.
here is my .htaccess

CODE
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?route=$1 [L,QSA]

the index.php is loaded correctly but when i type "daemon.uuuq.com/index" => this is same as index.php
The server returns http 404 error.

what's wrong with my .htaccess?

past-papers
I want to add this:

CODE
AddType application/x-httpd-php .html
to my .htaccess but there is no htaccess file on my server, even when I search for it using hidden files.

Do I just make a new one or what?
swordz
If there's no .htaccess, yes. If it fails to make the file, there probably is a .htaccess, whether you can see it or not.

swordz

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^.*\.js$

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^.*\.css$

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !/js/

RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?hru=%1/$1 [L,QSA]

I uploaded .htaccess file to uuuq.com server. But rewrite just doesn't work. Could you please say what is wrong. It is working fine on local web server.
p.s. it seems that .htaccess is not enabled for my account. Because than i tried to put some garbage in it. it doesn't end with 500 error

Hi there, I have a site at uuuq.com and i have uploaded .htaccess file for my own custom 404 error pages in the root itself. but its not working. Is this because of any mistake in my code(given below)

ErrorDocument 404 http://www.nigil.uuuq.com/404.html

Site address: http://www.nigil.uuuq.com

Is .htaccess is enabled in uuuq. If this is not allowed in uuuq please let me know i will remove it.

Any help will be apreciated,

Thanks in advance,

Does Zymic / uuuq let you have a 404 page?
And, Is the re-write engine [ON] or [OFF]?

Try going to the site without the www. (http://smalltym.uuuq.com). Unless the @ entry in the DNS is set up with www as an alias, the www subdomain will not work.

If you assign a domain name to your account, then you can set it up to work with or without the www.

please tell me how to delete the unused .httpaccess files?

In command promt of FTP-client type "DELE .htaccess"

You can't see it. But it exists.
Kenny M.
This is the first time I've used an .htaccess/.htpasswd file.
I have mostly used IIS so I just set the permissions in windows.

Anyway I made a folder in the root of my site called secure and one underneath it pass (/secure/pass)

I went online and generated an .htaccess and .htpasswd file.
I uploaded them to the server

Here are the contents:

.htaccess - in secure folder
CODE
AuthUserFile /secure/pass/.htpasswd
    AuthGroupFile /dev/null
    AuthName Secure-Login
    AuthType Basic

    <Limit GET POST>
    require valid-user
    </Limit>

.htpasswd - in pass folder
CODE
test:test

Now I'm prompted for a username/password but it won't accept it.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Kenny
babayasin
Guys,

password protection for directories works on this hosting just as expected. There are exactly 2 reasons for 500 error when you're trying to use it:

1) bad .htaccess file
2) bad .htpasswd file

that's ALL.

.htaccess file that WORKS:

CODE
AuthType Basic
AuthName "Whatever"
AuthUserFile "/www/vndv.com/x/y/z/xyzsite/htdocs/protected_dir/.htpasswd"

You should update the last line to show YOUR path to htdocs and protected dir whitin it.

Now, the .htpasswd (must be EXACTLY where you instruct the server to look for it in .htaccess file):

CODE
username:hwX8zhSYASRw6

The tricky part is the garbage looking string. It's the ENCRYPTED password as it is returned by UNIX crypt() function. Plaintext passwords WON'T WORK. There are number of ways you can get your password encrypted. I usually log into my local linux server and use htpasswd utility that comes with apache. I believe there are online password encrypting tools that use the same algorythm that htpasswd does (in fact, it can handle several encryptions; this is the default).

When you have these two files properly done and at their place, it just works, that's all.

.htaccess no work! Error 404
benn
QUOTE(Bread @ Oct 8 2007, 12:21 PM) *
If you are receiving the following error 500:
Recently limited functionality has been allowed within .htaccess, this allows any directives for limiting the availability, so for a quick example:

CODE
Order Deny,Allow
Deny from all

This can protect a directory.

There is however a caveat that comes along with only allowing this. Any directives which do not fall under the scope of 'Limit' will cause the server to choke and spit out the above 500 error.

To fix it, either comment out all other directives in your .htaccess, or move/delete the offending .htaccess.

Commenting in .htaccess is a line prefixed with '#'.

It is not at this time possible to use block statements around the limits.

CODE
<Directory /foo>
# this would not work
</DIrectory>

We are working on a solution.
