hi there is so many posts about this issue but im not sure if they are old problems or new so i thought id put new one.

im trying to install phpbb3. when i get to the database page i put in my details and i get this error

Could not connect to the database, see error message below.
Access denied for user 'robshorsetips_ro'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

please help.

Database name: robshorsetips_php
Database username: robshorsetips_rob
Database password:
Prefix for tables in database: phpbb_

There is your answer.

Change your username to something shorter, for instance robshorsetips_ro
I would reccomend doing the same for your database name too as I don't know if the error covers that or not.

The reason this happens is there is a error on the server where it won't recognize anything past a certain amount of characters. Judging from your error it's looking to be about 16 characters.

Maybe you have a password, and you forgot.
