Hi there,

first of all thanks to Zymic for their great free webspace! Unforunately I have a little problem with my Joomla-Installations (tried 1.0.13 and 1.5.0, but problem is still the same):

If I check "System Info" I get the information that all directories are UNWRITABLE:
(all folders: administrator/backup , administrator/components....)

Of course I can change the rights manually via ftp to 770 (writing for group allowed, but not for public users), but my question is: would the website now be secure enough against hacking? Or di you know another possibility to make Joomla run without changing these rights?

thx

Arudis
yes it will you just need to chmod the files they tell you too
EMOruffino
for now, i would leave it UNWRITABLE and chmod it back in case you need to make changes..... but leave the folder thats for writing content.

i usually leave mine at:

644
or
664

Thanks for quick answers - so I will try to modify only the demanded files or directories to 760 (this ist enough as i see them writeable on the "Joomla-Systems" screen.

To EMOrrufino: is joomla running perfectly without restrictions if you set your rights as you described? Thought there would be problems while uploading files, installing or for authors (writing content)

well when i want to do that i would change the permissions back to 777. its really just for safety....

To EMOruffino: think I will do the same: for installation process etc. setting the rights manually to 760, after this set them back to 644 or 664. Should be secure enough. But really not very comfortable isn't it? Well, but webspace is for free so I don't really want to complain about this. Just would make things easier.

Thx to all for help!

on a side note: the only reason i do this with Joomla, is since one of the last installations i had was hijacked. So keeping the permissions down, helps just a little bit more.
